This species was described by Ritter in 1980. The type locality is about 20 km west of Domeyko in Chile.

A look at the segments shows the impressive spination of these plants.
As already mentioned in Maihueniopsis crassispina there is a direct way from this locality in northern direction towards Mina Algarrobo, where Maihueniopsis crassispina is supposed to grow. The same plants grow all along this way, so that one has to assume a homogeneous population.
